Methodology
To gauge the enthusiasm for soccer in all 50 U.S. state, we employed a comprehensive two-step methodology:
Google Search Data Collection:
- We selected a range of search terms specifically associated with soccer, encompassing popular keywords related to the sport.
- Using SEMrush, we determined each state’s total monthly search volume for these soccer-related keywords.
Combining Search Data with Population Statistics:
- We sourced the most recent population figures for every state from the U.S. Census Bureau.
- To create a standard measure of comparison, we calculated the number of searches per 100,000 residents. This involved dividing each state’s search volume by population and multiplying by 100,000, resulting in a uniform metric.
Data Analysis:
- By merging the search data with population statistics, we could rank the states based on their per capita interest in soccer. States showing higher search frequencies per 100,000 residents were interpreted as having a greater interest in the sport.
- This approach, considering both the volume of searches and the size of the population, provided insightful perspectives on which states demonstrated the most substantial enthusiasm for soccer.
